1989 Small Town Girl Reunion

20200124_095912

It was just an hour and a half before they were scheduled to arrive and I was still in my pajamas!  The appetizers weren’t quite ready for the show and I was still scurrying around trying to tweak those last minute details that I wished I had done earlier. By 5pm the Inn was ready (and I was dressed) to welcome the first four gals from my graduating highschool class of 1989. I was so excited but yet nervous; a couple of the girls I haven’t seen in thirty one years!

All of a sudden I felt a little insecure- just like highschool again. Thanks to a last minute appointment, my hairstylist successfully covered my grays but there was no way I was going to be able to hide those extra pounds that I have added in the last few years….oh well.

The girls arrived and all the insecurities melted away! It was a joyous reunion and it was as if we all just picked up where we left off. The years in between didn’t matter; we were girlhood friends again and we all had lots of stories to share with each other!

The first evening together was spent enjoying hors d’oeuvres, drinking wine and reminiscing about our young girl days. Old photos were presented and confessions of highschool crushes were declared while ballads of the 80s hummed from my phone (can’t beat a Journey’s playlist in transporting you back to to 1989 ❤).

The next morning we met two more of our classmates at Mandie’s coffee shop- just after making a quick, but necessary, stop into Hanisch Bakery!

We visited a few shops in the historic downtown then ate lunch at The Staghead Gastropub- a great menu with enjoyable food!

After lunch a few of us stepped into Art Reach, donned aprons and sat down for our painting lesson. After two hours of helpful and entertaining instruction we completed our works of art! It was a lot of fun and I would definately do it again!

Ensuing a very tasty dinner at Nacho Loco (I have found the BEST nachos!) we traveled back to the Inn, put on our comphies or jammies, and continued to muse over our memories late into the night. More photos and yearbooks were brought out to pour over.

The next morning it was time to say goodbye. While the gals were packing up to head back home, I was lamenting the thought that we really needed one more day to recount and relate to all the other stories that we’ve held close to our hearts over the last 31 years. Even though it seemed too short, it was a perfect, fun filled weekend celebrating friendship!

Ladies, my friends, let’s do it again soon! I admire and love the strong and grace-filled women you have become! Your visit, conversation, generosity, laughs, tears and friendship have made my life that much richer and I look forward to continuing our friendships for another thirty one years!

Holiday Stroll 2019

Wow, earlier this week I woke to a dusting of snow! It was beautiful in the sunshine but deep down I was wincing because I’m not yet ready for winter. (Hmmm……all of a sudden, I was wondering where my winter coat is stored.)  Winter has a way of doing that- it pops up suddenly, gets you scrambling and of course, Christmas comes to mind.

In this post, I want to tell you about Red Wing’s charming holiday event held on Friday, November 29th, that rivals any quaint Christmas town in a Hallmark movie.  The Downtown Holiday Stroll and newly added Who’s Who of the West End District offers a celebration of yuletide festivities to usher in the Christmas season.

A Mid Afternoon Break

A Mid Afternoon Break20191015_152845

October is our busiest time at the Candlelight Inn Bed and Breakfast. People travel to Red Wing, Mn to view the beautiful colors on the forested bluffs and to drive the Great River Road around the exquisitely blue Lake Pepin.

Because we love having guests in our home, we take great care in preparing for your stay at the Inn. However, every once in awhile, Dave and I take a break from polishing the silver and venture out into town for a a bit of nourishment and play.  Also, we enjoy recommending to you the places we are fond of in our picturesque river town.

Mandy’s Coffee and Cafe was the perfect place for an afternoon cuppa and respite. Its cozy interior felt so good on a gray and blustery day. I sipped on a flavorful chia latte- Christmas in a cup- while Dave savored his robust black coffee. Because we are trying to slim down a bit, we shared a warm cardamon roll – next time, I’m claiming a whole one for myself!

Watch for my upcoming post on our dearly loved Hanisch Bakery- oh my goodness- so good! (The “slimming down” is proving to be a little difficult for me…..)

Come and visit Red Wing, “the best weekend getaway town” in MN.  We have the perfect room for your stay while you discover the gems of Red Wing. Check out our FB page for our Christmas gift certificate special. We hope to see you soon!

Front Porch Season

20190426_150653.jpg

“…the good ‘ol American front porch seems to stand for positivity and openness; a platform from which to welcome or wave farewell; a place where things of significance could happen.”  Dan Stevens

The long awaited season of front porch living is under way! The white wicker furniture is set in place and the cushions are fluffed and plumped. White lights hang overhead to lend a warm glow to the cool evenings.

The days when I can take the time to linger on the front porch with a beverage and a book is a luxury. I settle myself in the wicker rocking chair, close my eyes, inhale the smell of spring and listen to the relaxing sounds of Red Wing.20190426_144952

The majestic magnolia tree that is rooted near the porch has produced an abundance of white flowers this season; the porch is the ideal place for breathing in the sweet fragrance of the many blossoms.FullSizeR

While relaxing on the porch, the sound of church bells and train whistles create a charming sense of nostalgia of a simpler time in this historic rivertown.

100-Mile Garage Sale!

It’s that time of year – garage sale season! Many people take the time in spring to unburden themselves by selling their accumulated possessions at bargain low prices in order to lighten up their living spaces and wardrobes for the coming year.

Then there are others who enjoy “feathering their nests”. Garage sales, yard sales, tag sales become a most anticipated treasure hunt. Perhaps a list is made to search for specific items at rock bottom prices or maybe the day is left to chance and a gem is discovered that, unbeknownst to the finder, is essential for life and happiness.

I personally love finding the sales with the fresh, homemade, baked goods that are displayed on a card table, next to the person with the cash box. An assortment of cookies packaged in plastic baggies with a twist-tie or delicious bars arrayed on a white paper plate covered with cling wrap. Yum! Sweet nourishment to continue my quest.

So, get the truck or Suburban out of the garage and gassed up. Make space in your trunk and mark your calendars for May 2-5, 2019 to experience the 100-mile Garage Sale “that spans all towns along Lake Pepin” – Minnesota and Wisconsin side. http://www.100milegaragesale.org/

Reserve your comfortable room at the Candlelight Inn in Red Wing, MN to refresh yourself with a good night’s sleep in our relaxing guest rooms and partake of a delicious 3-course breakfast the next morning before venturing out on your hunt!  http://candlelightinn-redwing.com/

We look forward to your stay and hearing about the treasures you find!
